Elven fungi are a species of sessile symbiont consumers which parasitize various species of plant. They target plants early on in their lifecycle, typically as seeds but as late as early seedlings. Elven fungi grow throughout the entirety of the plant and target its structure and growth cycle, disrupting and taking control of it in ways which are not fully understood. The fungus causes its host to grow extra body parts which would otherwise not exist and to grow extremely modified body parts.
While many species of plant already possess minor vision, some elven plants possess significantly better vision in the form of modified flowers and fruits. Branches and roots grow significantly more limber and with muscle-like fibers which allow them to move.
Elves themselves are sophonts which occur as a result of the parasitic relationship between the fungi and plants. An elf’s conscious being seems inseparable from both the parasite and host, and it appears that elf individuals associate fungus and plant with their body and see neither as separate. After infection neither host nor parasite can survive without each other, requiring key nutrients provided by the other individual.
