The Edge is an abstract geographic feature equidistant in all directions from the Central Pole which represents the furthest part of the Plane’s habitable zone. The Edge is where the atmosphere, heavens, and Plane all converge and where the Great Fog begins. The Edge is not only an important geographic reference point, but also an important scientific curiosity that explains a lot about the natural world.1

Geography

Roughly 60% of the Edge falls on land, the other remaining area occupying the ocean. The entirety of the Edge is bitterly cold, a result of oceanic and atmospheric circulation. Winds and water which reach the Edge have simply lost too much energy on their journey from the harmony line to significantly warm the air. For this reason, much of the Edge is covered in ice sheets, some of which are seasonal, but most of which are year-round.

While there is no solid barrier stopping passage through the Edge the Great Fog does appear as a giant living wall hugging the atmosphere. It is impossible for life which requires oxygen to survive passing through the Edge and into the Fog without suffocating. It is also impossible for Gods to pass into the Fog as is decreed by the First Epoch Star which created the Plane and Fog.

History

During the start of the God-War the Plane had an extent significantly larger than it is today. Stars like Border Operation, Frontier Beyond, and Claim Star detail the lives and territories of lesser-Gods who lived beyond the modern Edge. Following the First God Council the Fog Star would be published by the Creation Quadrinity with the help of What Is and Is Not and the confines of the world would shrink to resemble the modern day’s Edge. The shrinking of the Edge would lead to an event known as the The Great Poleward Fog Migration, wherein millions of Gods would race against the Great Fog so as to not be consumed.

Throughout the rest of the Early-War Epoch the Edge would become a somewhat favorable place to hold territory as it removed an entire direction that needed to be defended. However, the onset of organisms in the Mid-War Epoch would see these territories become less favorable as life could not as easily survive the frigid temperatures. Gods would employ a number of tools in an attempt to subvert life’s inoperability at these temperatures, though many of these methods would not survive to the end of the war.

This article is considered complete for the moment, but is missing sections which can be elaborated on as the setting develops! If you think it needs expansion now, suggest an edit through a GitHub issue!

The History header could be expanded upon as to how the Edge became important to sophont history. A section on the ecology surrounding the Edge could also be added.
